<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Natural Female Bodybuilding Prep UK</h4>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Coached by Steff Noble, Pro Athlete and experienced UK Natural Bodybuilding Coach</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Searching for a <strong>natural female bodybuilding coach in the UK</strong> is very different from searching for a general online PT.<br>Natural bodybuilding requires strict drug tested standards, long term planning, and a coach who understands female physiology, not shortcuts.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">At Pro Prep Coaching, I specialise in <strong>natural female bodybuilding prep in the UK</strong>, working with women competing in <strong>drug tested federations</strong>, across the whole world. Including natural transformations that don&#8217;t end in stage.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The most notable Natural bodybuilding federation in the World is WNBF. I run and host WNBF UK events and prepare athletes for stage from complete beginner to Pro Athlete. I prepare those athletes and fitness enthusiasts for all manner of goals who want to test their physical ability naturally.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This article breaks down what real natural transformation and natural contest prep looks like, who it is for, and how coaching should actually work.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity"/>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">What Is Natural Female Bodybuilding Prep?</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Natural female bodybuilding prep means preparing your physique for competition <strong>without performance enhancing drugs</strong>, under federations that use polygraph testing and drug testing. WNBF, WNBF UK, PNBA, ICN, NPC, INBA, BNBF, NPA, UKDFBA, PCA NATURALS, 2 BROS NATURALS, NBW, ANBF. To name a few.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This requires:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Longer timelines</li>

<li>Smarter calorie manipulation</li>

<li>Sustainable training progression</li>

<li>Hormone and recovery awareness</li>

<li>Psychological support through prep phases</li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is not crash dieting.<br>My approach to contest prep is strategic, evidence based coaching. Taking your body and mind on a journey to do something 99% of people cannot do safely and sustainably whilst learning key skills you will learn for long term health and general life.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity"/>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Why Female Athletes Need a Specialist Natural Bodybuilding Coach</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Female competitors face unique challenges during prep:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Metabolic adaptation</li>

<li>Hormonal fluctuations</li>

<li>Stress sensitivity</li>

<li>Recovery capacity</li>

<li>Post show rebound risk</li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As a <strong>female drug tested bodybuilding coach in the UK</strong>, my approach prioritises:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Long term health alongside stage condition</li>

<li>Strength retention and muscle density</li>

<li>A clear post show exit plan</li>

<li>Education so athletes understand the process, not just follow instructions</li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Natural prep done properly should leave you stronger, not broken. I have prepped for 2 decades safety as one of the leading PRO natural female bodybuilders and coaches in the industry. I have tried and tested evidence based principles on myself to ensure they worked, worked with 100s of women through the years to build their confidence and teach them ways to do this sport in a healthy and rewarding way. In order to coach to this level it is my belief you need to have walked the walk and tried numerous approaches to ensure you have the authority and ability to coach with conviction and certainty.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Don&#8217;t let a poor stage attitude hold you back from getting the placings your physique deserves</strong></h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>DR. ANDREW CHAPPELL BSC (HONS), MSC, PHD, ANUTR (SPORT/EXERCISE): WNBF PRO NATURAL BODYBUILDER, JUDGE, COACH AND POSING COACH</em></p>

<blockquote class="wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow"><p>if you want to connect with the audience and get on the good side of judges then aim to project a humble, open, approachable, confident, sporting and genuinely aurora.</p></blockquote>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Whenever I work with clients on posing, I always talk about the importance of stage presentation and confidence. The ones that aren’t confident, I try to teach them to fake it until they make it e.g. Look confident, even if you are nervous. I explain that bodybuilding is a combination of: sport, art, and entertainment. They should consider themselves as a performer rather than as simply a competitor. The greatest bodybuilder of them all, Arnold Schwarzenegger was the embodiment of the performer. As were all the great posers: Frank Zane, Ed Corney, Lee Labrada, Bob Paris, Lee Priest, Shawn Ray, Melvin Anthony.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="359" height="512" src="https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/unnamed.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1700" srcset="https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/unnamed.jpg 359w, https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/unnamed-210x300.jpg 210w" sizes="(max-width: 359px) 100vw, 359px" /><figcaption>Arnold was a master of posing, his personal was always one of supreme confidence</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The greats all understood human psychology, and how their demeanour could positively or negatively impact their placing. They understood how to use non-verbal ques to connect with the audience, e.g. facial expressions, posture, eye gaze. Now, some people are better at reading facial expressions than other, but humans are incredibly perceptive creatures, and you don’t have to be a professional poker player to tell what’s going on in someone’s head.</p>

<blockquote class="wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow"><p>We are all hardwired to detect different facial expressions, and at the most basic level these signals tell us if we should approach, or avoid another human (e.g. is this a friend or foe).</p></blockquote>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Picture the following scenario, you walk down the street past three strangers: the first stranger scowls at you, the second stranger smiles, and the third has a blank expression. Which of the three strangers would you most want to meet for a coffee later? We are all hardwired to detect different facial expressions, and at the most basic level these signals tell us if we should approach, or avoid another human (e.g. is this a friend or foe). Moreover, it is for this reason that drama/dance performance schools teach their students the importance of non-verbal ques to convey emotions and connect with their audience.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Human behaviour is guided by these, and non-verbal ques, as they provide us with vital clues about how a person is feeling and what their intentions might be. Considering the example above, our eyes detect the facial pattern, posture, eye movements and signals are sent to the brain for processing. These signals go to both the amygdala as well as the prefrontal cortex in the brain. The former, a more primitive part of the brain is responsible for instant reactions like fight or flight responses, while the latter is involved in more complex processing. The division of these signals allows us to rapidly detect potential threats and respond. For example, if there is an element of danger, your amygdala may stimulate release of adrenaline causing your body to mobilise fuel stores and raise your heart rate in anticipation of danger; while the processing part is trying to work out the intentions of the stranger. This all happens automatically and using MRI, PET scanners and electromyographics scientists can detect activity in different regions of the brain that response to facial expressions associated with trust, disgust, ambivalence and pain. Curiously when we detect someone in pain, the same regions of the brain are activated in response, just like when your embarrassed on someone else behalf.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/1_jANlfUvQ_MpfGIay7_LCrA-1024x717.jpeg" alt="" class="wp-image-1703" width="691" height="484" srcset="https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/1_jANlfUvQ_MpfGIay7_LCrA-1024x717.jpeg 1024w, https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/1_jANlfUvQ_MpfGIay7_LCrA-300x210.jpeg 300w, https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/1_jANlfUvQ_MpfGIay7_LCrA-768x538.jpeg 768w, https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/1_jANlfUvQ_MpfGIay7_LCrA-1536x1076.jpeg 1536w, https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/1_jANlfUvQ_MpfGIay7_LCrA-2048x1434.jpeg 2048w, https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/1_jANlfUvQ_MpfGIay7_LCrA-1200x840.jpeg 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 691px) 100vw, 691px" /><figcaption>Which of these expressions do you expect would make a more favourable impact on a judging panel?</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<blockquote class="wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow"><p>People can usually pick out smiles which are genuine and express humour, enjoyment and authentic happiness, compared to the arrogant side of the mouth smiles, or the rye disappointed smile.</p></blockquote>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Eye contact is another interesting social que and gazing with neutral and smiling expression can be perceived as either positive or negative. Scientists have coined terms such as “live” persons to characterise individuals who make eye contact and those who show interest and are engaged. This can be compared to a lack of eye gaze which can be perceived as deceitful or unengaged. People can also detect the subtle differences between smiles. For example, people can usually pick out smiles which are genuine and express humour, enjoyment and authentic happiness, compared to the arrogant side of the mouth smiles, or the rye disappointed smile.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="850" height="279" src="https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/smiles.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1696" srcset="https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/smiles.jpg 850w, https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/smiles-300x98.jpg 300w, https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/smiles-768x252.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 850px) 100vw, 850px" /><figcaption>Look at the smiles in the image above, its clear to see which ones are genuine and fake</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So why does any of this matter? Well from a spectator’s and a judge’s perspective, we can all pick up on the non-verbal cue’s competitors make when they&#8217;re on stage. It’s clear to see which competitors are: confident and enjoying themselves, nervous and in distress, lacking confidence, unprepared and out of their depth, confused, disappointed, arrogant/smug, or are a good sportsman/woman. Your facial expressions, body language and general demeaner say a lot about you and people that work in marketing know this all too well. Think about the last set TV adverts you watched, you can bet the actor/actress had an open posture, a confident smile (with perfect teeth) and they look happy to be using that particular product. Judges although they are supposed to be non-bias are after only human and subject to all the same social cues the rest of us are. Your goal as the competitor therefore is to always try to attract their attention and get them onside and scowling, and looking mean doesn&#8217;t help your cause.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="400" height="533" src="https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/mf5209.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1694" srcset="https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/mf5209.jpg 400w, https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/mf5209-225x300.jpg 225w" sizes="(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px" /><figcaption>Advertisers<em> have long understood human psychology and how to use non-verbal ques to connecting with the audience</em></figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So, what’s my advice to those reading this article, well if you want to annoy the judges, alienate audience and damage your chance of placing then the following doesn’t go down to well:</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>THINGS THAT DON&#8217;T HELP YOU WHEN you stand on stage</strong></h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>Smugness and arrogance e.g. where you project a &#8220;too cool for school&#8221; persona doesn&#8217;t help you.<ul><li> Treading the line between confident and cocky can be a difficult one, get it wrong and it can be hard for a judge or audience to relate to. They might even want to see you lose! </li></ul></li><li>Overly aggressive posing, stamping, elbow butting.<ul><li>This on the one hand can be unsporting, and on the other hand you can just look silly</li></ul></li><li>Grimacing, scowling and frowning, emotionless facial expressions<ul><li>You may look scary, unapproachable, lacking confidence, uninterested or lacking in confidence</li></ul></li><li>Antics like stretching, press ups, and constant fidgeting or posing<ul><li>This can look unprofessional, or that your unprepared (stretching/press ups), or it can just be annoying</li></ul></li></ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I’ve seen all of the above from the judges table and these traits never help competitors. These competitors have forgot about or never learned the performance and artistic elements of bodybuilding.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you want to connect with the audience and get on the good side of judges then aim to project a humble, open, approachable, confident, sporting and genuinely aurora.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>THINGS THAT WILL HELP YOU WHEN YOU STAND ON STAGE </strong></h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>A large confident smile, upright open posture<ul><li>Stand up tall, open your mouth show your teeth and smile like your genuinely happy to be there. You look awesome and this is supposed to be fun!</li></ul></li><li>Great posing and posing fitness<ul><li>If you can pose well, you’ll get noticed, particularly if you can flow through the poses. If your fit, you should be able to control your breathing and facial expressions. Even though it’s tough you should be able to make it look easy. Work on this.</li></ul></li><li>A positive mindset, and a genuine passion for the stage<ul><li>Don’t let call outs get the better of you. Put an effort into your posing routine, you can see the competitors who care and who love their routines. Be proud of what you’ve achieved and the physique you’ve produced, this is your chance to show it off what you’ve worked so hard all year for.</li></ul></li><li>Sporting and having fun<ul><li>Shake hands, be courteous on stage and back stage and even if you don’t get the results you want (or if you do), be mindful of your fellow competitors. Don’t let your face show you up.</li><li>When someone is enjoying themselves they give off a positive almost intangible vibe that everyone can buy into. It really does draw your eye.</li></ul></li></ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Margins are small when it comes to competition so don’t let a poor stage attitude let you down.</p>

<h6 class="wp-block-heading"><em>STEPHANIE NOBLE &#8211; WNBF Pro Natural Bodybuilder, INTERNATIONAL Judge, Coach and Posing Coach</em></h6>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Competition Format</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In male competitive bodybuilding athletes are judged on their relative strengths and weakness compared to their peers. There are different divisions (teen, jnr, open, master etc), but the competition takes place over three Rounds</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Round 1, Symmetry; </strong>The muscle size and proportions of the body are judged using the 4 symmetry poses, or quarter turns – front relaxed, side pose to the right and left and rear relaxed</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Round 2, Muscularity;</strong> athletes muscle size and conditioning (appearance of low bodyfat) are judged using 8 mandatory poses: front double biceps, Front Lat spread, Side triceps, side chest, rear double biceps, rear lat spread, abdominals and thighs and most muscular</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Round 3, Free Posing and Posedown; </strong>the athlete’s physique is judged as they perform a routine to music. Routines usually last between 30 to 90s. This round allows athletes to display their strengths, hide weakness and is often considered the tie breaking round. Of note some bodybuilding competitions don’t always score this round separately.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>*As an adjunct, athletes are also judged on their presentation, which includes their ability to display their physique affectively as well as their skin tone, stage tan and presence.</em></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Competition Scoring</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The sport is subjectively in the same way that sports like high diving, ice skating or gymnastics is but just like the aforementioned sports, the judges are working from a criteria. An athlete receives a score from 1 to 7 (or sometimes higher depending on how many competitors are in the class), for each of the rounds, and the athlete with the lowest score over all is the winner.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It is possible to score higher and lower in different rounds, and because there are multiple judges it’s also possible to score higher or lower with different judges. The head judge will tally up the scores from all the judges on the panel, usually the highest score and the lowest score for each athlete is removed to remove bias and standardize. Where there’s a tie on the overall score card, the head judge may have the final decision on who the winner might be, or the athlete with the highest number of higher places is usually given the nod. An example of a bodybuilding score card might look something like this:</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Individual Judges Score Card Example (Judge A)</strong></p>

<figure class="wp-block-table"><table class="has-fixed-layout"><tbody><tr><td>&nbsp;</td><td><strong>Round 1 (Symmetry)</strong></td><td><strong>Round 2 (Muscularity)</strong></td><td><strong>Round 3 (Free Posing)</strong></td><td><strong>Overall Score</strong> <strong>&amp;</strong> <strong>Place</strong></td></tr><tr><td><strong>Athlete 1</strong></td><td>1</td><td>3</td><td>3</td><td>7 (3)</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Athlete 2</strong></td><td>2</td><td>2</td><td>2</td><td>6 (2)</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Athlete 3</strong></td><td>4</td><td>5</td><td>5</td><td>14 (5)</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Athlete 4</strong></td><td>3</td><td>1</td><td>1</td><td>5 (1)</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Athlete 5</strong></td><td>5</td><td>4</td><td>4</td><td>13 (4)</td></tr></tbody></table><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>Example score card, competitors might score high in one round and lower in others. Overall scores from the judge go to the head judge, it&#8217;s possible for a competitor to obtain a perfect score (first place in every round).</em></figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Overall Head Judge Score Card Example</strong></p>

<figure class="wp-block-table"><table><tbody><tr><td>&nbsp;</td><td><strong>Judge A</strong></td><td><strong>Judge B</strong></td><td><strong>Judge C</strong></td><td><strong>Judge D</strong></td><td><strong>Judge E</strong></td><td><strong>Judge F</strong></td><td><strong>Judge G</strong></td><td><strong>Score</strong></td><td><strong>Placing</strong></td></tr><tr><td><strong>Athlete 1</strong></td><td>7</td><td>7</td><td>6</td><td><s><span class="has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color">5</span></s></td><td>8</td><td><s><span class="has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color">9</span></s></td><td>7</td><td>35</td><td>3</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Athlete 2</strong></td><td>6</td><td>6</td><td>5</td><td>6</td><td><s><span class="has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color">4</span></s></td><td><s><span class="has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color">6</span></s></td><td>6</td><td>29</td><td>2</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Athlete 3</strong></td><td>14</td><td>15</td><td>15</td><td>14</td><td>15</td><td><s><span class="has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color">15</span></s></td><td><s><span class="has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color">14</span></s></td><td>73</td><td>4</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Athlete 4</strong></td><td>5</td><td>3</td><td>3</td><td>4</td><td>5</td><td><s><span class="has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color">3</span></s></td><td><s><span class="has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color">5</span></s></td><td>20</td><td>1</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Athlete 5</strong></td><td>13</td><td>13</td><td>12</td><td>12</td><td><s><span class="has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color">11</span></s></td><td>13</td><td><s><span class="has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color">15</span></s></td><td>75</td><td>5</td></tr></tbody></table><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Example score card, the highest and lowest scores for each competitor is removed to produce  the final score. </figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">The Symmetry Poses: Round 1</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The 4 poses in the symmetry round are as follows:</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>The 8 Mandatory Poses</strong> (Muscularity): Round 2</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There are 8 mandatory poses each contestant must show in a bodybuilding competition. Some competitions only use 7 (excluding the most muscular), there are of course other poses, but these are the ones you must do. The sequence might also differ slightly between competitions, but this is generally the order you can expect to see them in.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Pose 1 of 8 – Front Double Biceps</strong></p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="768" height="1024" src="https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_3786-768x1024.jpeg" alt="" class="wp-image-3683" style="width:302px;height:auto" srcset="https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_3786-768x1024.jpeg 768w, https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_3786-225x300.jpeg 225w, https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_3786-1152x1536.jpeg 1152w, https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_3786-1536x2048.jpeg 1536w, https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_3786-1200x1600.jpeg 1200w, https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_3786-scaled.jpeg 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px" /></figure>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The front double biceps along with the most muscular is probably the most well-known bodybuilding pose. The shot is a showstopper, there’s no hiding with this one and any weakness a competitor might have from the front are exposed. The pose shows off your arms, the front lat width to create the V taper, quadriceps size and definition, and front calf musculature. If you lack lat size, or have a thick midsection, or undersized legs, this pose like the others where the arms are above the head can really hurt a competitor’s chances.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Pose 2 of 8 &#8211; Front Lat Spread</strong></p>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="768" height="1024" src="https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_3859-768x1024.jpeg" alt="" class="wp-image-3684" style="width:321px;height:auto" srcset="https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_3859-768x1024.jpeg 768w, https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_3859-225x300.jpeg 225w, https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_3859-1152x1536.jpeg 1152w, https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_3859-1536x2048.jpeg 1536w, https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_3859-1200x1600.jpeg 1200w, https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_3859-scaled.jpeg 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The lat spread is all about the V taper and displaying your lat width from the front, chest thickness, shoulder width, front arm and forearm size, quadriceps mass and separation, and calf development. Mastering a good front lat spread takes time, but once you’ve got it you can create an imposing shape that dwarfs your peers.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Pose 3 of 8 – Side Chest</strong></p>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="768" height="1024" src="https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_3796-768x1024.jpeg" alt="" class="wp-image-3685" style="width:302px;height:auto" srcset="https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_3796-768x1024.jpeg 768w, https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_3796-225x300.jpeg 225w, https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_3796-1152x1536.jpeg 1152w, https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_3796-1536x2048.jpeg 1536w, https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_3796-1200x1600.jpeg 1200w, https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_3796-scaled.jpeg 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The side chest is a classic bodybuilding pose, legend has it Arnold Schwarzenegger could balance a pint of milk on his upper pecs while performing the side chest. This pose isn’t just about the chest though and should be thought of as a side of the body pose. Consider the calves, hamstrings, quads, glutes, midsection arms and chest in this shot.&nbsp; Be sure to show your strongest side, top to bottom or the side that your most comfortable with. If you have tattoos that might mean choosing the side of the body without them. When you hit this shot remember to rotate your hips to make your waist look as small as possible.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Pose 4 of 8</strong> <strong>&#8211; Rear Double Biceps (showing hamstrings and calf)</strong></p>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="768" height="1024" src="https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_3813-768x1024.jpeg" alt="" class="wp-image-3686" style="width:314px;height:auto" srcset="https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_3813-768x1024.jpeg 768w, https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_3813-225x300.jpeg 225w, https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_3813-1152x1536.jpeg 1152w, https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_3813-1536x2048.jpeg 1536w, https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_3813-1200x1600.jpeg 1200w, https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_3813-scaled.jpeg 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In bodybuilding there’s a saying, shows are won from the back. Competitors can look great from the front, but if’ they’ve not put the time and focus into the back, then they’ll struggle to win the competiton. &nbsp;&nbsp;The rear double biceps is all about detail and width, this pose shows off the arms, the thickness of the back, and conditioning in the upper and lower body. This pose also shows off the thickness and definition of your back muscles, including your trapezius, infraspinatus, teres major, latissimus dorsi, and erector spinae. Furthermore, the rear double biceps convey glute and hamstrings development and separation, along with rear calf size. When you hit this one, remember don’t tuck in your glutes to show detail in the glutes, this lengthens the back and can make competitors look smaller.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Pose 5 of 8 &#8211; Rear Lat Spread (showing hamstrings and calf)</strong></p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="768" height="1024" src="https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_4124-1-768x1024.jpeg" alt="" class="wp-image-3687" style="width:383px;height:auto" srcset="https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_4124-1-768x1024.jpeg 768w, https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_4124-1-225x300.jpeg 225w, https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_4124-1-1152x1536.jpeg 1152w, https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_4124-1-1536x2048.jpeg 1536w, https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_4124-1-1200x1600.jpeg 1200w, https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_4124-1-scaled.jpeg 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px" /></figure>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In this shot you spread your wings! The rear lat spread is about back width and just as importantly thickness. Competitors can have great width, but if they haven’t put the time into packing on the size with heavy compounds, sometimes you can see that lack of thickness. This shot also shows the size of your arms from the rear, glute development and definition, hamstrings size and separation, and rear calf musculature.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Pose 6 of 8 &#8211; Side Triceps</strong></p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="768" height="1024" src="https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_3805-768x1024.jpeg" alt="" class="wp-image-3688" style="width:366px;height:auto" srcset="https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_3805-768x1024.jpeg 768w, https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_3805-225x300.jpeg 225w, https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_3805-1152x1536.jpeg 1152w, https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_3805-1536x2048.jpeg 1536w, https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_3805-1200x1600.jpeg 1200w, https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_3805-scaled.jpeg 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px" /></figure>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Like the side chest, the side triceps pose displays the side of the body and should be considered in the same light. Unlike the side chest though, in the side triceps the midsection is more on display, so it’s important to have tight abs and diced obliques. No matter which side you choose to hit your pose, you should rotate your body a little toward one side and then the other to allow all the judges to get a good view of your side triceps pose. It also displays shoulder and chest size, side forearm development, thigh separation, and calf development, all again from the side.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Pose 7 of 8 &#8211; Abdominal and Thigh</strong></p>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="768" height="1024" src="https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_3841-768x1024.jpeg" alt="" class="wp-image-3689" style="width:368px;height:auto" srcset="https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_3841-768x1024.jpeg 768w, https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_3841-225x300.jpeg 225w, https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_3841-1152x1536.jpeg 1152w, https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_3841-1536x2048.jpeg 1536w, https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_3841-1200x1600.jpeg 1200w, https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_3841-scaled.jpeg 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The abdominal and thigh is a pose that conveys the development and definition of your abs, external intercostals, serratus anterior, and quadriceps muscles. It also shows off your chest thickness, front arm and forearm size, lat width from the front, and calf size once again from the front. The abs and thighs is an aesthetic shot and not everyone is going to look great in this pose, particularly if you have a thick midsection, as a result competitors often do several variations of this pose. The old school vacuum is one such variation of this where competitors place both hands over their head and such in their mid-section to create a hollowed out abdominal region. In the other version of this pose, competitors place both or only one hand over their head and then flex their abs from each side, or only a single side, respectively, to better show off their oblique and intercostal musculature and definition.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Pose 8 of 8 &#8211; The Most Muscular</strong></p>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="768" height="1024" src="https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_3838-768x1024.jpeg" alt="" class="wp-image-3690" style="width:349px;height:auto" srcset="https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_3838-768x1024.jpeg 768w, https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_3838-225x300.jpeg 225w, https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_3838-1152x1536.jpeg 1152w, https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_3838-1536x2048.jpeg 1536w, https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_3838-1200x1600.jpeg 1200w, https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_3838-scaled.jpeg 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As the name suggests this pose displays all the muscles of the body, flexed to their most extreme. The most muscular is the final of the eight mandatory poses, although some competitions only judge the first 7. There are several ways to do this shot and this pose displays overall muscularity from the front, including the mass and definition of your upper trapezius, shoulders, chest, arms, forearms, abs, quadriceps, and calves. You can do the crab version of the most muscular by bringing your arms and hands together across your abdomen. You can also do a variation by placing one hand by your side and bringing the other arm across your abdomen. It’s really up to you, to decide which pose works best for your physique.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Free Posing and The Posedown</strong>: <strong>ROUND 3</strong></h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="2560" height="1707" src="https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/7_BNBF-ROUTINES-153-edited-scaled.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-3693" style="width:355px;height:auto" srcset="https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/7_BNBF-ROUTINES-153-edited-scaled.jpg 2560w, https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/7_BNBF-ROUTINES-153-edited-300x200.jpg 300w, https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/7_BNBF-ROUTINES-153-edited-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/7_BNBF-ROUTINES-153-edited-768x512.jpg 768w, https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/7_BNBF-ROUTINES-153-edited-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/7_BNBF-ROUTINES-153-edited-2048x1365.jpg 2048w, https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/7_BNBF-ROUTINES-153-edited-1200x800.jpg 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 2560px) 100vw, 2560px" /></figure>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Free Posing</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The free posing round usually takes place after the first and second rounds, and if the show is split into a pre-judging session and evening show, then this round will take place at nighttime. Alternatively, sometimes competitors will perform their free posing routine prior to rounds 1 and 2, in this scenario this round isn’t always judged separately on the judges score card.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The goal of this round is to try and catch the judge’s eye and sway any decisions that might be close in their favor. So this is your chance to show your strengths and hide weaknesses. For example, if a competitor is strong in the front and side shots, then more poses from the front than rear make sense. Equally if a competitor has a great top half, but weak legs, then lots of shots on the floor could be the best way to display their physique. When it comes to the routine the aforementioned should be considered, but how the routine is put together and sequenced is really up to the competitor. You’ll usually have 60s to perform a routine, in terms of music, I always recommend choosing something with a lower beats per minute count, with a song that has no swearing, and no screaming metal. Music that has high points and low points work well for sequencing. Remember importantly this is not a best dancer round, and the basics done well can be just as effective as an elaborate routine. If your thinking about how to put together a routine be sure to check out YouTube, there are thousands of examples where you can draw inspiration from. I’ve included some examples of my own routines down below.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>The Posedown</strong></p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="683" height="1024" src="https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/MASTERS-O50_O60_JUDGING-PRESENATION_BNBF-82-683x1024.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-3691" style="width:271px;height:auto" srcset="https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/MASTERS-O50_O60_JUDGING-PRESENATION_BNBF-82-683x1024.jpg 683w, https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/MASTERS-O50_O60_JUDGING-PRESENATION_BNBF-82-200x300.jpg 200w, https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/MASTERS-O50_O60_JUDGING-PRESENATION_BNBF-82-768x1152.jpg 768w, https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/MASTERS-O50_O60_JUDGING-PRESENATION_BNBF-82-1024x1536.jpg 1024w, https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/MASTERS-O50_O60_JUDGING-PRESENATION_BNBF-82-1365x2048.jpg 1365w, https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/MASTERS-O50_O60_JUDGING-PRESENATION_BNBF-82-1200x1800.jpg 1200w, https://proprepcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/MASTERS-O50_O60_JUDGING-PRESENATION_BNBF-82-scaled.jpg 1707w" sizes="(max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px" /></figure>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The posedown is the final element of a competition. The house DJ will play music and competitor will have the chance to go head to head against their rival competitors. The judges will be in the process of tallying up scores at this point, so treat this part of the show as an opportunity to gain some final points. Pose your strongest shots and try to highlight competitor weaknesses. For example, if your back is a strong point and you and rival competitor are vying for the same place, be sure to show this off, particularly if your rival is weak in this area, you never know, it could be the difference between winning and losing.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Closing Thoughts</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Practice makes perfect, competitions can be won and lost based on a competitor’s ability to display their physique effectively. Be sure to put the time into both perfecting the poses, but also building up your posing endurance. Be sure you can pose for at least 20 minutes straight without a break before you get to the stage. If your unsure about how to pose correctly then be sure to get help from an experience competitor or posing coach. ProPrep Coaching offers both in person and online sessions working with competitors at all levels, be sure to check the link below. Finally, even though it’s a competition, most importantly don’t forget to have fun and whatever the outcome always be a good sport.</p>
